InterLibrary Loan (ILL)
Interlibrary loan is a free service that allows SEU students, faculty, and staff to
borrow resources not owned by Mahoney Library. We can borrow items such as print books,
journal articles, book chapters, and DVDs. These items will have a due date set by
the library that lent us the item, which could be anywhere from a few weeks to a few
months. While some requests can be filled quickly, others may take up to a few weeks
to be filled.
To submit an ILL request for a physical item (such as a book or DVD), first use our
catalog to find the item you would like. If you’re looking to get a copy of a book
chapter or journal article, find the entry for the whole book or journal. Once you
find the item you want, click on the item’s title to open the full entry. From here,
click on the blue button to the right located under “Access Options”.
Using this button will auto-fill all the item’s details into the request form, and the only thing you will have to add is specific information about the chapter or article you want (if applicable). Add your need-by date and any additional comments about the item you’re requesting in the “About my request” section. You will need to be logged in to your library account in order for the request to go through.
You can also submit a request using the link below:
ILL Request Form
Please remember to check the Online Catalog to see if Mahoney Library already has the item you need before submitting your request.
In rare cases, the lending library may charge a fee to borrow their books. We make
every attempt to borrow from free libraries, but if a fee-based loan is the only option,
we will contact you with the cost to get your consent before billing.
Direct Borrowing
Students, faculty, and staff who are willing and able to travel to other libraries to pick up books may do so through the VALE NJ reciprocal borrowing program. Both Fairleigh-Dickinson University (only available to fac/staff and graduate students) and Drew University are less than 10 minutes away from campus and are excellent resources for print materials. If you are interested in borrowing books from these other libraries, please fill out this form and bring it to Mahoney Library for staff to sign. You can also pick up a copy of this form at the library circulation desk.
Once Mahoney Library staff sign the form, take the completed form and photo ID to the VALE library of your choice and present it at that library's circulation desk. You will be issued borrowing privileges and/or a guest borrower card to use at that library. You can do this for multiple VALE libraries as long as you complete separate forms for each library.
Other university libraries nearby that allow undergraduate borrowing include Caldwell University, Kean University, Montclair State University, New Jersey Institute of Technology, Rutgers University, and Seton Hall University. Not every library allows undergraduate students to borrow books, so please check the link below before traveling.
