January 27, 2025
The Saint Elizabeth University Honors Program was privileged to host Dr. Laura Winters, distinguished English professor, for an engaging discussion titled, “The Reading Life: Get Lit with Literature!” Dr. Winters has been an essential part of SEU for 43 years, known for her vast knowledge and passion for literature. A fun fact about Dr. Winters? She reads a book a day!
The lecture, held earlier this week, captured students with deep insights into the art and impact of reading and writing. The discussion further highlighted the importance of literature in shaping intellectual growth and personal development.
Dr. Winters encouraged students to embrace the creative process of writing, stating, “When beginning to write, just get it out. We are often writing to figure out what we mean.” She further emphasized the value of revisiting one’s work, offering this tip: “Your last paragraph can become your first.”
During the hour-long session, Dr. Winters explored the many reasons why individuals read, from expanding understanding to fostering insight. She urged students to reflect on their reading habits, noting, “Consider what informs your choices—your identity, background, and profession—and how this impacts the books you engage with.”
Dr. Winters also highlighted the different paces required for different texts and the importance of using tools like dictionaries or seeking guidance to deepen understanding.
Through her presentation, Dr. Winters not only shared practical advice but also inspired students to reflect on their intellectual journeys. “Much more than anything explicitly said, Dr. Winters embodied the passion and enthusiasm for reading that inspires students to pursue the reading life,” remarked Dr. Steven Hertler, Assistant Professor of Psychology.
The SEU Honors Program extends heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Winters for her generous continued contribution to the SEU community.
