Partnership to Enhance Catechetical Training

Morristown, N.J., May 1, 2024 – Saint Elizabeth University (SEU), is proud to announce its partnership with the Diocese of Paterson in a pioneering initiative aimed at expanding and enriching the training of Catechetical leaders and lay ministers within the Catholic Church.

This collaboration represents a pivotal step in a broader effort across the Catholic Church to elevate the standard of Catechetical Ministry and Religious Education. In alignment with this vision, SEU and the Diocese of Paterson are launching a Certificate in Catechetical Ministry and Religious Education tailored for Diocesan Catechetical leaders and other lay ministers.

“Over the past year, SEU and the Diocese of Paterson have worked together to create a cooperative framework enabling Diocesan Catechetical leaders and lay ministers to earn academic credits and fulfill all requirements for this certificate program. The program will use a curriculum offered through the National Community of Catechetical Leaders (NCCL),” said Gary B. Crosby, Ph.D., president of Saint Elizabeth University.

“Working through the Diocese, SEU rigorously reviewed and evaluated the NCCL curriculum to ensure its alignment with the institution's established Certificate in Religious Education,” said The Most Reverend Kevin J. Sweeney, Bishop of Paterson. “We are thrilled to embark on this journey with the University to empower and equip Catechetical leaders and lay ministers with the knowledge and skills vital for effective ministry within our faith community.”

The new Catechetical Ministry and Religious Education program is slated to commence in Fall 2024 and includes a comprehensive curriculum totaling 18 credits. This includes four 4-credit undergraduate courses and a 2-credit retreat. Additionally, participants may have the option to pursue graduate credits with supplementary content and instruction, subject to eligibility.
