Director of EOF

Dr. Melissa Jones serves as the Director of the Educational Opportunity Fund. Dr. Jones earned her doctorate degree from Caldwell University, Master’s degree from University of New Haven, and undergraduate degree from University at Albany. Prior to accepting her new role, Dr. Jones was an administrator, educator, and team leader for the East Orange public school system for 20 years focusing on quantitative and qualitative data to  affect improvement and retention. Resulting in improved student outcomes. 

As a first-generation learner and EOP alumna, she believes in education and the importance of developing and implementing a community mission, vision, and strategic plan. Dr. Jones provides leadership training on a variety of topics such as academic success,  service learning, leadership development, data informed decision making, health and safety, and programming.

As a lifelong educator and member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Dr. Jones believes in service to all mankind. Her objective is to always inspire learners to apply new ideas to problem-solving. As a former adjunct, Dr. Jones has practical experience with the application of educational philosophy, the integration of student development theory analysis, and the evaluation of specific learning targets. Additionally, Dr. Jones has  exceptional interpersonal skills with the ability to build relationships among a  diverse population of students, alumni and community partners.

When not at work, Dr. Jones loves spending time with her family and friends. She can be found in Newark at NJPAC, the Prudential Center, Symphony Hall, and the Newark Museum of Arts.

 


 

Jorge CarigaJorge Cariga

Assistant Director of EOF

Jorge first joined Saint Elizabeth University in 2018 as an EOF Counselor. He then transitioned to Senior EOF Counselor in 2020 and he has been our Assistant Director of EOF since 2023. Jorge has the passion and dedication to empower students to strive to their best potential. His ability to relate and motivate students enhances the EOF family environment.

Jorge is an EOF alumnus who has spent the last 16 years in the education system advocating and guiding students from high school to the college level. He received his Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Fairleigh Dickinson University and completed his Master of Arts in Education with a concentration in School Counseling from Saint Peter’s University. He is also an active member of Lambda Theta Phi Latin Fraternity, Inc. Jorge is committed to moving our university forward while continuing to build on the successes of our EOF program.

 



Zyaire ThompsonZyaire Thompson

Senior EOF Counselor

Zyaire earned his Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from Saint Elizabeth University. As a first-generation college student and EOF alumnus, Zyaire supports students from economically and educationally disadvantaged backgrounds. He is passionate about providing academic, personal, and financial counseling to help students succeed in college. Additionally, he assists with course planning, career guidance, and navigating any challenges that may arise during his students academic journey. Zyaire has a strong connection for giving back to his community. 

Outside of his professional pursuits, Zyaire enjoys coaching basketball at Gateway Academy in Newark, working out, and cheering on his San Francisco 49ers and  Boston Celtics.

 


 

Jocelyn MerinoJocelyn Merino

EOF Counselor

Jocelyn earned her Bachelor's degree in Sociology with a minor in Education from Fairleigh Dickinson University.  She is currently pursuing her Master’s in Higher Education Administration from Fairleigh Dickinson University. 

As a first-generation college student and EOF alumna, Jocelyn enjoys being the voice for her students and being a form of support for them, providing a sense of community. Jocelyn holds a strong dedication to tackling the complex issues of social, racial, and economic justice. Her ultimate goal is to acknowledge and support all students, regardless of color, ethnicity, or socioeconomic background.

Outside of her professional pursuits, Jocelyn enjoys watching the sky at any time of the day, and going to the beach for relaxation and tranquility.

 


 

Clarissa IsabelClarissa Isabel

EOF Counselor

Clarissa earned her Bachelor's degree in Psychology and Mathematics from Fairleigh Dickinson University. As a first-generation college student and EOF alumna, Clarissa has a love for empowering students to reach their full potential and a strong belief in transformative change while creating a supportive and inclusive environment. Her passion for the mission of EOF and her lived experience as an EOF scholar helps our program soar to the next level. Her conclusive goal is to ensure that all students feel supported and valued. Clarissa plans to pursue a Master’s degree in Clinical Psychology in the very near future. 

Outside of her professional pursuits, Clarissa enjoys traveling, spending time with her family, and listening to music. 

 


 

Ashlyn HallumsAshlyn Hallums

EOF Counselor

Ashlyn earned her Bachelor’s degree in Forensic Science with a Biology concentration from the illustrious Fayetteville State University. She is currently pursuing her Master’s in Justice Administration and Public Service here at Saint Elizabeth University.  Her academic achievements reflect her dedication and commitment to excellence; qualities that she now will channel into supporting and guiding students within our Educational Opportunity Fund program at SEU. Ashlyn’s personal journey and background has equipped her with a unique understanding of the challenges and opportunities that students from similar backgrounds may encounter, making her an invaluable resource for advocacy, mentoring, and advising. 

Outside of her professional pursuits, Ashlyn enjoys traveling the world, trying new foods and spending time with her partner, Allana. She also enjoys spending time with family and friends. 

 


 

Mary-Land LindorMary-Land Lindor

EOF Coordinator

Mary-Land is a dedicated advocate for student success, blending her academic achievements with a deep commitment to mentorship and guidance. She holds both a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Psychology and Counseling Psychology from Saint Elizabeth University, where she is now pursuing her Doctorate. As the Coordinator of the EOF program, she passionately empowers students, drawing on her own experiences to provide meaningful support and encouragement throughout their journeys.

Outside of her professional role, Mary-Land finds joy in the simple pleasures of life. She cherishes moments spent with family, nurtures her love for music through singing, and seeks solace in the peace of home. Her adventurous spirit leads her to explore new horizons, all while her steadfast faith in God remains a guiding force in her life and work.
