Who can borrow

Mahoney Library welcomes ILL requests from any library within the continental US through OCLC. Libraries within New Jersey can request items via JerseyCat. Mahoney does not accept international loans.

Individuals outside of Saint Elizabeth University wanting to borrow an item from Mahoney should contact their local library to place a request.

Cost

Mahoney Library does not charge for loans or copies.

Turnaround time

Mahoney aims to respond to all requests within four business days of receipt. Physical items will be shipped through Library Link NJ where possible, otherwise they will be sent via non-trackable USPS.

Loanable items

Most books held by Mahoney are available for lending. The only items we do not lend are books held on course reserve and technology items.

Overdues

At seven weeks overdue, Mahoney Library will create and send an invoice for lost book charges. Payment will be due 30 days after receipt of the invoice. Libraries that do not return the overdue item or pay the invoice within 90 days may be blocked from further borrowing.

Lost book charges will total the cost of replacing the book plus a $10 processing fee. To avoid the processing fee, borrowing libraries may also send a new copy of the item as replacement. The replacement copy must be the same edition or newer than the lost copy, and be in excellent condition. Borrowing libraries should communicate their intent to send a replacement copy before doing so.

Copy requests

Mahoney Library follows copyright law and CONTU guidelines regarding the copy of articles and book chapters. For items held in our print collection, this means that we will only copy one chapter from a book per request. Because of limited staffing and equipment, any requests that exceed one chapter or 30 pages will be canceled. For ebooks and journals held in our online collection, we follow publisher limits regarding how much is allowed to be downloaded.

Damaged items

Items returned damaged will be reviewed to see if the damage impedes the function of the book. If the book is no longer legible and useable, the lending library will be billed for replacement of the item (see overdues section for information on replacement costs). Damages that are generally accepted include: torn or bent covers, light stains, and mild page tears. Examples of billable damages include: dark stains that cover writing, excessive writing or highlighting, loose or missing pages, and separated covers.

Loan period and renewals

All lent items will have an initial lending period of 8 weeks, with two 6 week renewals allowed. Requests for additional renewals should be communicated via email and are at the discretion of staff.

Recalls

Mahoney Library will only recall items if they are needed for course reserves. Borrowing libraries are expected to return recalled items as soon as possible.
