What is a mentoring program?
Formal college mentoring programs are designed to create strong partnerships between
a college student and at least one professional mentor, thereby contributing to student
success both while in college and after graduation.

- Improves the likelihood of securing a career position after graduation
- Has been shown to enhance student retention rates
- Engages alumni in meaningful work with students
- Helps students feel more connected to their college
At SEU, we believe mentoring can also:
- Contribute to a student's pre-professional and professional career-related knowledge, skills and abilities, thereby enhancing self-confidence and leadership abilities.
- Provide mentors with an opportunity to pause and reflect on their own career growth in preparation for sharing their well-earned wisdom with others.
What is a mentor?
- A mentor is a professional
- Usually from outside of the SEU campus community
- Who supports students in their personal and professional growth by sharing the knowledge and insights they have gained throughout their years of experience
- Who can help students set goals and support them as they move through the process of achieving those goals
- Might even assist with creating important network connections in the student's field of interest
How long is the mentoring program?
The typical mentoring program is a one academic year (two semester) commitment.
How often should a mentor and mentee meet?
They should meet at least once a month. This could be via phone, text, email, Facetime, Skype or in person.
