Saint Elizabeth University is authorized under Federal law to enroll nonimmigrant
students.
In addition to the general requirements for admission, an international student seeking
admission to the institution is required to secure an F-1 (student) Visa before enrolling.
To apply for this visa, students must request and secure an I-20 (Certificate of Eligibility
for Nonimmigrant Status) from the school after submitting the additional documentation
outlined below.
Please be aware of the following before beginning the I-20 application process:
- Do not make travel arrangements or register for classes until your F-1 visa has been approved.
- When receiving an F-1 visa, it is expected that your primary purpose for attending school is to study. International Students are only eligible for on-campus employment, unless approved for CPT and/or OPT.
- Wait times for change of visa status are no longer being published by the government and students on a B1 or B2 visa cannot attend classes until change of visa status is approved.
- We only offer I-20s to full-time (undergraduate – 12 credits; graduate – 9 credits), degree-seeking students. We do not offer I-20s to prospective students looking to take English Language Learning courses.
- Student submits application to SEU
- If transferring: Submit transfer form to current school for SEVIS record transfer
- Student submits High School or College transcript
- Transcripts must be accompanied by a COURSE by COURSE evaluation by a member of the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services (NACES). Commonly used members are World Education Services (WES) or International Education Research Foundation (IERF). For more information about transcript translation, please visit naces.org, wes.org or www.ierf.org.
- Student submits required I-20 documents to Admissions Department
- Institution creates "Certificate of Eligibility" (I-20) and provides to student
- Student pays SEVIS I-901 fee
- Student then applies for F1 visa in one of the following ways:
- Outside of the U.S.: The local U.S. consulate or embassy
- See the DOS website for more information
- In the U.S. on another visa or in another nonimmigrant status: apply for a change
of status to F-1 or M-1 through the USCIS. Some visas, such as H4s, allow students
to study while waiting for change of status, most others do not. Be sure to talk to
your international advisor at the school before enrolling.
- File I-539 at uscis.gov. (If the student is a citizen of a visa exempt country – Canada, Bermuda, etc. – contact the U.S. POE directly)
- Outside of the U.S.: The local U.S. consulate or embassy
The same steps apply to students who are already in the country or are transferring from other schools:
- Send a copy of F-1 visa to Designated School Official (DSO)
- Be sure to complete all of the required Enrollment Steps.
- Keep DSO informed of travel plans or changes
- Be sure to keep all documents in your carry-on bag
